About Leo breton
Leo pioneered real-world, on-road vehicle tailpipe emissions testing as an EPA engineer in the 1990's. To enable this he invented, developed, and commercialized the Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS) that also made Real Driving Emissions (RDE) testing possible. PEMS was also used to find the diesel emissions issues a few years ago.
As Technology Development Director at HORIBA, he more recently invented and helped productize the HORIBA Torque Matching (HTM) method for replicating real-world vehicle operation in a laboratory. HORIBA now plans to extend the HTM method from whole-vehicle replication to tire-only replication of tire abrasion and tire patch emissions in a laboratory environment where the emissions can be collected for analysis. The same method could also generate realistic patch emissions and TRWP samples for use in ecotoxicology experiments.
In between those efforts at EPA and HORIBA, Leo also managed a biofuels laboratory and invented a novel hybrid vehicle powertrain that is now owned by Tula Technology.
